Security Guard Resume Sample (USA): Security Officer Resume Example for 2026
Complete guide · 13 min read · Updated 2026
Security officer hiring runs on two questions, and most resumes for the job answer neither. Are you licensed right now, and can the site put you on post this month? And what size of operation are you used to holding down on your own?
Below is a complete security guard resume sample for a US contract officer role, annotated section by section, plus what changes for armed posts, for people coming in with no experience, and for anyone moving between retail loss prevention, corporate lobby work and industrial or logistics sites. The sample is a California BSIS-registered officer with six years across distribution, corporate campus and retail.
Choosing your template
A security resume is a licence, a post history and a set of systems, and all three have to survive a parser that reads strictly top to bottom. Single-column keeps the Guard Card attached to its expiry date and each post attached to the site it covered. Large guard contractors such as Allied Universal and Securitas hire at volume through applicant tracking systems, and a two-column template with a licences sidebar is the common reason an expiry date arrives detached from the licence it belongs to, which reads to a screener as a licence with no date at all.

Header and licence line
Name, then a title line that carries the role and the licence together: "Security Officer · BSIS Guard Card + Baton Permit". City and state, one phone number, a professional email. Licensing is a hard gate in this profession rather than a nice-to-have, so a header that makes a screener scroll to the bottom to find out whether you can legally stand a post has wasted the only seconds you were given.
Professional summary
Three or four lines: years in the work, the site types, the size of the post you hold, and your live licence status. "BSIS-registered security officer, 6 years across distribution, corporate campus and retail. Nights lead on a 1.2M sq ft logistics campus: 14 access points, 96 Verkada cameras" tells an account manager what scale you can cover alone at 3am. Skip an objective unless you are entering the field.
Post history: the first entry
For each post: the contractor and the site, your title, the city and state, and the dates. Then the size of what you covered. Square footage, access points, camera count, gate traffic, headcount on shift. "Night post on a 1.2M sq ft campus: 14 access points, 96 Verkada cameras" is the level of specificity that separates you from every resume that says "patrolled premises and monitored CCTV".
Earlier posts, and what changed because you were there
Do not let older jobs decay into duty lists. Each one still needs its site size and at least one thing that moved: an incident rate you brought down, a drill time you improved, an audit you passed clean. Security work produces measurable outcomes constantly and they are almost never written down, which is exactly why writing one down works.
Education
One line is enough for most officers, and it is not the part of the page that hires you. Administration of justice, criminal justice or a related associate degree is worth naming; so is military service, which belongs in experience rather than education and carries more weight than either. If you have neither, leave the section short and let the licences and post history carry the resume.
Skills, split four ways
Post and patrol, systems, reporting, and safety and conduct. The split matters here more than in most professions because a site is buying four separate capabilities and wants to confirm each one in a glance. Name the platforms exactly: Verkada, Lenel OnGuard, Genetec, Milestone XProtect, TrackTik. Sites search for their own system as a literal string, and "CCTV systems" matches none of them.
Licences and certifications
Give every line an issuing body and an expiry: "BSIS Security Guard Registration (Guard Card) — CA Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, exp. 08/2027". Add the permits separately, because a baton or firearms permit is a distinct authorisation rather than part of the Guard Card. Include current CPR or BLS, and any site-relevant safety card such as OSHA 10, which is often what decides between two otherwise equal candidates for an industrial post.
Security Guard resume sample, annotated
Marcus Delaney, a BSIS-registered security officer in Sacramento with six years across distribution, corporate campus and retail sites
This is a full six-year post history on one page, which is what this profession looks like at that length when it is written tightly. Read it as a structure to copy rather than wording to copy, and pay attention to where the annotations say it falls short, because a sample that only praises itself teaches nothing.
The annotations follow the page top to bottom, in the order a contract manager reads it.

Header and title line
"Security Officer · BSIS Guard Card + Baton Permit" does the single most important job on this page. The role and the licence arrive together in the first inch, so a manager filling a post next week has their gating question answered before they have read anything else. Most security resumes bury this at the bottom under Certifications.
What this header leaves out
There is no availability line. In a profession hiring for nights, weekends and specific shift patterns, "Available nights and weekends" or "Open to swing and graveyard" is genuinely load-bearing information, and it costs one line. This header has the room for it.
Professional summary
Three lines carrying six years, three site types, a 1.2 million square foot campus, fourteen access points, ninety-six cameras, a monthly report volume and live licence status. That is a large amount of verifiable scale in a small space, and it is the strongest block on the page.
First post: size before duty
The opening bullet leads with the size of the site rather than with a verb, which is the right instinct. "14 access points, 96 Verkada cameras, 180 to 240 trailer movements a shift verified against BOL and seal numbers" tells an account manager exactly what this officer covers alone. Compare that with the generic "patrolled premises" that opens most resumes in this field.
The unbadged-entry bullet
"Cut unbadged entry at the driver gate from 11 a month to 2 by rebuilding the check-in script; client rolled it out to two other sites" is the best line on the page. It is a measured reduction, a named cause, and third-party validation in the form of the client adopting it elsewhere. One bullet like this is worth five duty descriptions.
Report writing, stated as a quality claim
"Write 15 to 20 incident reports a month, none returned for rework by the client safety board in 18 months" turns a routine duty into evidence. Report quality is hard for a contract manager to test at interview and expensive for the site when it is poor, so a defensible claim about it lands harder than it looks.
Restraint, not confrontation
The second post says "supported 3 arrests, no use-of-force complaints filed", and the third says merchandise recovered across documented cases with reports and evidence photos. Both frame the officer as someone who documents and de-escalates rather than someone who tallies confrontations. That is the disposition sites are actually buying, and the phrasing is doing deliberate work.
Skills, split four ways
Post and patrol, Systems, Reporting, Safety and conduct. A reader can confirm four separate capabilities in one glance, and the platforms are named individually rather than collapsed into "CCTV systems", which is what makes them findable when a site recruits around Lenel or Verkada. The one flaw is the template's own heading, "Technical Skills", which undersells a block that is mostly not technical.
Certifications at the bottom
The content is right. Every line carries an issuing body and an expiry, and the permits are listed separately from the registration, which is correct because they are separate authorisations. The placement works here because six years of post history is the stronger argument, but anyone entering the field should move this block directly under the summary, where the licence is the best thing they have.
What a contract manager checks in the first few seconds
Security hiring is volume hiring against a start date. A contractor filling a post has a client expecting cover on a particular Monday, and the first pass through the applications is a short series of yes-or-no checks rather than a considered reading.
Four questions, roughly in this order. A gap at any one of them usually ends the review before the post history is reached.
Turn security duties into evidence: eight rewrites
Every officer patrols, monitors cameras and writes reports. Listing those describes the licence, not the person holding it. What distinguishes you is the size of what you covered, the systems you covered it with, and anything that measurably changed at the site because you were standing there.
Instead ofPatrolled the property and monitored CCTV.
WriteNight post on a 1.2M sq ft distribution campus: 14 access points, 96 cameras on Verkada, hourly interior and perimeter patrols logged in TrackTik.
Site size, access-point count, camera count and the platform. "Patrolled the property" could describe a car park or an airport.
Instead ofChecked in trucks and drivers at the gate.
WriteVerified 180 to 240 trailer movements a shift against bill of lading and seal numbers, holding any mismatch for the shift supervisor before release.
Volume plus the actual control being performed. Seal verification is a specific, valuable competency that the vague version hides completely.
Instead ofResponsible for access control at the front desk.
WriteRan lobby console for a 9-floor multi-tenant building: badging for roughly 1,400 tenant staff, visitor screening and Lenel OnGuard access control.
Names the population, the building and the platform. "Access control" on its own tells a site nothing about scale or system.
Instead ofWrote incident reports as required.
WriteWrite 15 to 20 incident reports a month, none returned for rework by the client safety board in 18 months.
Report writing is the highest-liability part of the job. A volume and a quality record turn it from an assumed duty into a claim worth interviewing about.
Instead ofReduced security incidents at the site.
WriteCut unbadged entry at the driver gate from 11 a month to 2 by rebuilding the check-in script and the visitor log.
A before number, an after number, and the mechanism. The original sentence is the same claim with all the evidence removed.
Instead ofAssisted with emergencies.
WriteFirst responder on 9 medical calls and 2 small fires, holding scene and handing off to Sacramento Metro Fire with a timed incident log each time.
Counts, the handoff to the responding agency, and the timed log. This is what emergency competence looks like written down.
Instead ofTrained new security staff.
WriteShift lead for 5 officers; trained and post-checked 6 on access control, report writing and seal verification.
A count and the specific things taught. Post-checking is supervisory work and signals you are the person a contractor can build a shift around.
Instead ofHandled shoplifters and worked with police.
WriteRecovered roughly $61,000 of merchandise across 74 documented cases in two years, each with a written report and evidence photos, and testified in 4 misdemeanour cases.
The recovery value and case count size the work, and the documentation and testimony show it was done in a way that survived scrutiny afterwards.
Security guard resume with no experience: what actually counts
Entry into security is more open than most fields, because the licence is the gate rather than a degree. The mistake newcomers make is writing an apologetic resume about what they have not done rather than a concrete one about what they have.
Get the licence question answered in the header, then build the page out of adjacent evidence.
What to lead with, by post type
The evidence that wins a logistics night post is not the evidence that wins a corporate lobby or a hospital. Leading with the wrong category tells the account manager you sent the same resume to every site.
| Post type | Lead with | Also useful | Avoid leading with |
|---|---|---|---|
| No experience | Licence or licence status, availability, CPR and first aid | Military service, conflict-facing civilian work, clean driving record | An objective statement about seeking opportunities |
| Corporate lobby | Badging volume, tenant population, access platform by name | Visitor screening, evacuation drills, professional presentation | Confrontation and arrest counts |
| Industrial and logistics | Site square footage, access points, gate and trailer traffic | Seal verification, fire watch, OSHA 10, lone-worker overnight cover | Customer service language |
| Retail and loss prevention | Recovery value, documented case count, CCTV review | Apprehension policy adherence, statements, court testimony | Aggressive framing of apprehensions |
| Hospital and healthcare | De-escalation training, behavioural response, patient-safety awareness | Restraint policy, incident documentation, working alongside clinical staff | Law-enforcement-style framing |
| Mobile patrol | Sites per shift, drive route, alarm response times | Clean driving record, licence class, lone-worker protocol | Static post duties |
| Event and crowd | Crowd size, ejection and medical protocols, radio discipline | Bag and ID checks, queue management, evacuation routes | Sedentary monitoring duties |
| Armed post | Firearms permit with expiry and qualification date | Range currency, use-of-force policy, prior armed sites | Unarmed duty lists |
| Supervisor or lead | Officers supervised, post orders written, client-facing reporting | Scheduling and coverage, audits passed, training delivered | Individual patrol tasks |
Licences and permits, written so a screener can act on them
This is where the security resume is most often let down by formatting rather than by content. The licence usually exists. It is frequently undated, unattributed, or written in a form that does not survive a search.
Requirements differ by state and by country, so write what you hold and who issued it rather than a generic phrase. California is a useful illustration of how much detail sits behind a single card: the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services requires Power to Arrest training before a Guard Card is issued, thirty-two hours of security officer skills training within the first six months of registration, and eight hours of continuing training every year, with baton and firearms permits issued as separate authorisations.
How guard contractors actually screen these resumes
The large security contractors recruit at volume through the same applicant tracking platforms as any other large employer, and a single posting can attract hundreds of applications because the entry requirements are clear and widely held.

Common mistakes to avoid
Security Guard resume: FAQ
What should a security guard resume include?
A header with your name and licence on the title line, a three-to-four-line summary giving years, site types and the size of post you hold, a licences and certifications section with issuing bodies and expiry dates, a post history with site size and at least one measurable outcome per job, a short education line, and skills split into post and patrol, systems, reporting, and safety and conduct.
How long should a security officer resume be?
One page for almost every officer, including anyone with under about ten years in the work. Contract security produces a lot of site changes, and the temptation is to list every one at full length; group short assignments under the contractor that placed you instead. Two pages is reasonable for supervisors and account managers with real staffing and client responsibility.
Do you need a licence to work as a security guard in the US?
It depends on the state and on whether the post is armed. California is a clear example of the regulated end: the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services requires Power to Arrest training before a Guard Card is issued, thirty-two hours of security officer skills training within the first six months, and eight hours of continuing training annually, with firearms and baton permits issued separately. Check your own state's rules, and write whatever you hold with the body that issued it.
How do I write a security guard resume with no experience?
Lead with the licence if you already hold one, because it removes the employer's biggest obstacle to hiring you. Then treat adjacent work as the evidence it is: military or law enforcement service, retail or hospitality roles where you handled conflict, event stewarding, caretaking, driving jobs with a clean record, and anything involving keys, cash or access. Add CPR, first aid and any safety card, and say plainly that you are available for nights and weekends if you are.
What skills should be on a security officer resume?
Four groups. Post and patrol covers access control, foot and vehicle patrol, visitor screening, alarm response and key control. Systems names the platforms: Verkada, Lenel OnGuard, Genetec, Milestone XProtect, TrackTik, two-way radio. Reporting covers incident reports, daily activity reports, CCTV review and export, evidence handling and court testimony. Safety and conduct covers de-escalation, use-of-force policy, CPR and AED, fire watch and evacuation.
Should I put my Guard Card number on my resume?
Put the licence type, the issuing body and the expiry date; the number itself is optional and many officers leave it off a document they post publicly. What matters to the reader is that the authorisation is current and that they can see when it lapses. Bring the card itself to the interview, and make sure the expiry on the page matches the card rather than your memory.
What is the difference between an armed and unarmed security resume?
The licensing block, mostly, and the emphasis. An armed post needs the firearms permit written separately from the guard registration, with its own expiry, plus qualification dates and the calibre or weapon type where the state records it. The post history should then foreground the sites where the armed authorisation was actually used. Everything else on the page, including site size, systems and reporting, stays the same.
Do security guard resumes go through an ATS?
Yes. The large contractors hire at volume and screen through the same applicant tracking systems as any other big employer. Keep the layout single column, use standard headings, name your licences and your access-control platforms exactly as the posting spells them, and export a text-based PDF unless Word is requested. You can see what a parser actually pulls out of your file with the free ATS score check.
